CALL FOR APPLICATIONS:  2 PHD SCHOLARSHIPS

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS:  2 PHD SCHOLARSHIPS

2 PhD Scholarships

The University of Nairobi and the University of Copenhagen recently received a grant from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark within the Danida Fellowship Centre framework for the project entitled: “Improving milk and chicken meat quality and safety in the Kenyan food sector (QUALIFOOD)”.

The Grant has provision for two (2) PhD scholarships within the area of anthropology, sociology  or similar social sciences. The successful candidates will register at the Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies (IAGAS), University of Nairobi. The scholarships will cover payment of tuition fee for university of Nairobi, research cost, exchange programs and a living monthly stipend and are strictly tenable for three (3) years only.

Animal rearing and food product processing systems may be hampered by less than optimal on-farm biosecurity measures, unregulated access to, and use of antimicrobials. This may contribute to elevated levels of infectious disease such as bovine mastitis, and bacterial septicemia in poultry and overall contribute to antimicrobial resistance development. The PhD research topics will be centered on food safety in the production, processing and marketing of poultry and milk products, including practices and quality in animal rearing, and use of antimicrobials and other substances in the food chain. The research carried out by the two PhD candidates should provide new insights that contribute to improving the quality and safety of animal rearing approaches and of products marketed for consumption in Kenya or exported.

One PhD will focus on the practices and rationales of farming approaches, farming-related networks and the nature of farmers’ interactions with e.g. veterinarians, and pharmacies.

One PhD will focus on food chain systems, marketing, and consumer perspectives on food safety.
