The Institute of Anthropology, Gender and  African Studies (IAGAS) was established in August 1970 and was charged with the responsibility of promoting and conducting original researches in the field of African prehistory and history; musicology and dance; traditional and modern arts crafts; religion and other belief systems.

The Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies (formerly Institute of African Studies), situated inside the National Museums of Kenya compound, is one of the oldest Institutes within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. It started as a cultural division of the Institute for Development Studies in 1967. In 1970 the Institute became full fledged and moved to its current location inside the National Museums of Kenya compound. In addition, the Institute is the custodian of the historic Chiromo Mansion (which was declared a National Monument under the Antiquities and Monuments Act – Gazette Notice No. 1427 of 9th March 2001), where it houses its material culture section.

Poultry and small ruminants improve women’s purchasing power and household food security, but women are hindered from accessing and using livestock vaccines by barriers such as low awareness, high acquisition costs, accessibility, and unequal gender relations. These barriers put their livestock at risk of contracting diseases like peste des petits ruminants (PPR) and Newcastle disease (ND), which threatens women’s livelihoods.
