The Postgraduate diploma in Heritage Management is intended for professionals and non-professionals who are interested in heritage and museum development issues and wish to acquire the knowledge and skills to effectively manage and use the cultural heritage to ensure its conservation and integration in thr development of society.
The programme is meant to meet the growing demand from English speaking professionals and non-professionals in Sub-saharan Africa who are interested in the management of heritage and museum collections.
The term heritage is used interchangeably with the terms cultural heritage. It refers to the legacy of physical artefacts and intagible attributes of a group or society that are inherited from past generations, maintained in the present and bestowed for the future generations. Heritage also includes the natural heritage, that is, a nations's fauna and flora, natural resources, and landscape.
The objective of the programme is to provide students with skills to enable them to:-
1.Assess the conditions and needs of a collection taking into account its context, history and use.
2. Conceive, plan, design and implement programmes that raise the standard and role of conservation in their museums/ heritage institutions, taking into account identified needs and available resources.
3. Promote community partcipation and greater use of the museum resource, taking into account identified needs and available resources.
Enhance the role of cultural heritage and of museums in national development.
5. Design programmes that promote community enjoyment and appreciation of knowledge derived from museum and heritage collections.

Application forms can be obtained from the University of Nairobi Board of Post Graduate studies reception at the main campus upon payment of non-refundable fee of Kshs 3,000.00. The application fee must be paid in cash at Barclays Bank, Westlands Branch, UNES Application A/C No. 03-073-1023948. CASH AND POSTAL ORDERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Completed application forms with copies of certified degree certificate, transcripts and recepts of applications should be returned to the Director's office Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies (IAGAS).
